The Millard Fuller Story

“A planned life can only be endured”

– Seven words –

I once knew a man highly motivated and very adept at making money. By age 30 he had amassed a fortune perfectly in step with his well laid out life plan. Everything was clicking along as ordained, however his personal world was not so well! A family and marriage was at a tipping point, a generally unhappy life. Satisfaction and a real purpose he sought, remained elusive.

While on a weekend getaway in New York City to sort their future, in a hotel room, a kung fu martial arts show droned on, he happened to overhear seven words that would lead to a life altering decision. “A planned life can only be endured” These powerful words were the tipping point that led to he and his wife Linda to give away all their possessions, money, their status, their prestige and simply start life over!

The life that followed led them to become home builders. From a small farm in south Georgia, a tiny simple mustered seed idea… “that everyone should at the very least have a decent place to live and a warm dry house in which to live.

This idea, this concept, became Habitat for Humanity founded in 1976. Incredibly Habitat has become the largest Home builder in the entire world. Since it’s founding it has helped more than 29 million people gain access to new or improved housing around the world. A tiny seed idea that was planted, nourished, watered and grew and grew and grew.
